The essence and potential of AI lies in its ability to learn from data and make decisions. However, like humans, can these machines also make mistakes? Understanding bias in AI is crucial in order to maintain the sanctity of this powerful technology.

Machine Learning (ML) is a subset of AI where machines are trained to learn from data and make informed decisions or predictions. ML models analyze data, identify patterns, and use these insights to adjust their actions, all without being explicitly programmed. International organizations, governments, and corporations worldwide are beginning to recognize the importance of AI ethics. For example, the European Commission released draft regulations for AI in 2021 that aim to establish a legal framework for AI use. These regulations address concerns like bias, transparency, and accountability.

Taking a Closer Look at Transparency in AI

Transparency in AI, often known as explainable AI or XAI, ensures that AI models’ decisions can be understood by humans. This is crucial for trust, accountability, and bias mitigation. XAI allows us to uncover why an AI system made a particular decision, helping us identify and rectify any underlying bias.

But how feasible is complete transparency in AI? Can every single AI decision be thoroughly scrutinized? And how does this affect the sanctity of AI?


The Feasibility of Transparent AI

Complete transparency in AI, while desirable, is not always feasible. Particularly with complex deep learning models, understanding why a model made a certain decision can be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. These models involve numerous parameters and layers of computation, which can be near impossible to decipher, thus creating a “black box” problem.

However, strides are being made in the field of XAI. To truly ensure the sanctity of AI, it’s important to promote AI literacy. People need to understand what AI can and cannot do, the basics of how it works, and its potential risks, including bias. By empowering individuals with knowledge, we enable them to make informed decisions about AI, foster healthy skepticism, and ensure a greater level of accountability from AI developers and operators.

Initiatives to promote AI literacy are emerging across the globe. For instance, Finland launched a national program, “Elements of AI,” designed to educate its citizens about AI. The course has now been translated into various languages and is available for free online. We don’t know if just basic education will be enough to unleash the power of AI and mitigate the associated risks, but what one could do is constantly learn and apply AI in their daily lives responsibly.

The Path Forward: Ensuring the Sanctity of AI

As we move forward, maintaining the sanctity of AI will require an ongoing commitment from all stakeholders. Bias detection and mitigation, transparency, accountability, and AI literacy are all crucial pieces of this puzzle. Collaboration across sectors— including academia, industry, and government—will be necessary to establish and enforce ethical standards for AI.
